JAMES MARTIN COOKING LIVE

SATURDAY 4TH JULY

A photo of celebrity chef James Martin wearing a black velvet blazer with asparagus in his breast pocket, set against a dark gradient background.

James Martin made a great impact with his television debut in November ‘96 and has rarely been off our TV screens since. He was a regular chef on Ready Steady Cook (BBC2), and in 2006 he reached the semi-finals of Strictly Come Dancing (BBC1). James went on to present BBC1 ’s hit series Saturday Kitchen for 10 years, regularly attracting viewers in excess of 3.5 million. James is undoubtedly one of the most recognisable chef's in the UK today.

Growing up in nearby Malton, just 7 miles from Galtres Park, James' career began at Castle Howard, where his father ran the catering and James often helped out. He was Student of the Year three years running at Scarborough Technical College. At the tender age of 22, he opened the Hotel and Bistro du Vin in Winchester as Head Chef and for three years James had his restaurant at The Talbot, in Malton.  James has never appeared at a food festival in this area before, so his appearance at Flavours of Yorkshire is something of a homecoming!

A custom built 'pop-up' theatre will be created especially for this event inside the Galtres Park Arena. James will be cooking up a storm and big screens will show the close-up worktop action, so you won't miss any of the finer culinary details.

Being passionate about celebrating British food, James uses the best ingredients possible to create simple, delicious recipes that are accessible to all. A number of the traders you will find at Flavours of Yorkshire have featured on James' TV show and some of their products will also be included in these demos.

Each demo will also include a Q&A session where you can ask James those burning questions.

James is an accomplished author and a selection of his books will be available to purchase at the event from the Kemps Festival Bookshop in the foyer where James will be happy to sign any books purchased here.

Whenever James does a demo at food festivals up and down the country they sell out. So don't miss your chance to see James cooking live - get your tickets today!

For Florian, pastry is much more than a profession—it is a lifelong passion.

After honing his skills alongside some of the finest pastry chefs in France, Florian brought his talents to the UK, where his creativity and technical mastery quickly set him apart.

A former UK Pastry Champion and World Pastry Cup sugar prize winner, Florian is famous for his flawless macarons and intricate chocolate work. Today, he channels that world-class expertise into his bustling boutiques in Malton and York and also online, sharing his love for authentic, elegant French patisserie.

Viewers of the TV show Bake Off: The Professionals will also be familiar with Florian’s work as he is the resident pastry consultant for the show. In this role, he is tasked with preparing the flawless, high-level pastry and showpiece creations that are featured on the opening credits and which the competing professional teams are challenged to replicate during the show.

Florian will be showing his award-winning sugar work skills. You will see how he can transform sugar into art as Florian builds a sugar showpiece live and talks about how competition has shaped his mind and fine tuned his skills.

She has huge experience of running cooking courses and for several years was senior tutor at the Rosemary Shrager Cooking School at Swinton and still works with Rosemary on specific projects. Gilly arrived in Malton to do a pop-up cooking demo for the Food Lovers Festival in 2013, it was meant to be just 5 days but she never got to leave! After the festival was over Gilly launched Malton Cookery School in collaboration with The Talbot Hotel then, just before Covid hit, Gilly took the reigns of her very own cookery school and launched The Cook’s Place where she runs a huge and varied range of classes, demonstrations and food events. During this session at Flavours of Yorkshire Gilly will introduce you to Piers Edsall, a local artist blacksmith - together they run a workshop event called Anvil to Appetite where Piers makes the cutlery and Gilly cooks the food. Later Gilly will bring to the stage Liz Kemp who runs Kemps Bookstore in Malton, together they create an event called Cooking The Books where each time a different book is chosen as the inspiration for a meal that you cook then eat.
